September 19th 1959: Marilyn Monroe at a luncheon at 20th Century Fox Studios. In attendance were 400 other Hollywood stars, and leader of the Soviet Union Nikita Khrushchev, who had been invited by Fox to watch the filming of a risqué musical Can-Can. The luncheon was arranged in order to sweeten the deal and allow Khrushchev to mingle with Hollywood’s greats.
Marilyn spoke to Khrushchev and recited a line taught to her by Natalie Wood, who spoke fluent Russian: "We the workers of 20th Century Fox rejoice that you have come to visit our studio and country." Khrushchev replied: "You’re a very lovely young lady."Photographs by Burt Glinn.
